Way to Go Commuter Challenge! Help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by choosing to walk or bike to work the week of May 4-8! Action Alert--Bike Legislation in VT April 2009--What is going on in the Vermont Legislature around biking issues!
Please participate in the process--your voice does make a difference! Legislative Update: Thanks to many voices raised in opposition, the House Transportation Committee did not approve the administration's request for a moratorium on Enhancements funding. The members (listed below) of this committee deserve our thanks. This is an important victory for the future of bike/ped projects in VT. The transportation budget is moving now to the Senate side for consideration and you'll be notified if problems crop up there.
Action Alert: The House Transportation Committee is now poised to consider proposed legislation, including a "Safe Passing" bill that requires motorists to pass vulnerable roadway users with "due care" and "every reasonable precaution." At this point in the session, if the bill is to advance, it's necessary for the committee to sponsor it (as opposed to an individual legislator). For this reason, there is no bill number. Please let your representatives know, as soon as you can, that the "Safe Passing" bill is important to you and that you want the House Transportation Committee to sponsor it. Decisions on what bills to take up will be made in the next several days and we don't want to miss this opportunity to lobby for action on this bill. Your voice is especially needed as two members of the House Transportation Committee are from Rutland County: Dave Potter (vice chair) and Gale Courcelle. A quick and effective way to take action is to call the State House: (800) 322-5616 and leave a message for your rep. A Matter of Balance is a proven program designed to help people manage concerns about falls and increase physical activity. The Rutland Area Wellness Coalition is looking for volunteers to help provide this program. A Matter of Balance coaches help participants become more confident about managing falls by believing that they can increase their strength, find ways to reduce falls, and protect themselves if they do fall. In addition, participants report that they have increased the amount they exercise on a regular basis. There will be a coach training session on Thursday August 21 from 8:30am to 4:30pm at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. Rutland Multi-Use Path- August 2008 Update Multi-Use path update: RAPAC is frequently asked about the proposed Multi-Use path for Rutland. This project is being spearheaded by the Rutland Creative Economy Recreation Committee. The proposed path will be approximately 2-miles long and 10-feet wide, running from Giorgetti Park to the College of St. Joseph's. The path will provide access to some of Rutland City's great natural resources along East and Otter creeks, a safe place for kids and families to play and exercise, and an alternative commuting route for bikers and walkers. The design phase of the project began this summer and is expected to take six to eight months. The path right-of-way plans are dependant on the design engineering work but will begin prior to the completion of design engineering. Stay-tuned for future updates as the project progresses.
