Physicians used to define obesity as being 35 lbs. over ideal
body weight.
New obesity guidelines propose that doctors use the Body Mass
Index (BMI) to assess patients because the index is simple, correlates
to fatness, and applies to both men and women.
To determine BMI, weight in kilograms is divided by height in
meters, squared. ††Or you can just look on the handy
chart below, where someone has already done the math.
A BMI of 20.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9
is considered overweight, and one 30 or above is considered obese.
