Proctor Village
OVERVIEW: A scenic historic tour of a small town, which grew up around Sutherland Falls and later became the home of the world's largest marble industry.

TERRAIN: Mostly on village streets and sidewalks
LOCATION: From the intersection of VT Route 3 and US Route 4 Business in Center Rutland go north on Route 3 for 4.6 miles (or from the Proctor Marble Bridge go south on Route 3 for 0.2 miles) to the white marble St. Dominic's Church on the west side of Route 3 in Proctor village. Park in St. Dominic's Church parking lot (except when church services are in progress). Start your walk going north on South Street.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION: Turn left onto Main Street, across the marble bridge, bear left onto ChurchStreet, right onto High Street, and left onto School Street. Bear left onto West Street, and right onto Beaver Pond Road. At the north end of the Pond turn right onto Florence Road, and right onto North Street. At the five-way intersection of North, Main, and Market Streets you can see a gravel path that leads 200 yards west to the old Sutherland Falls quarry. Continue east on Main Street past the old Vermont Marble Company complex and the Marble Exhibit and then south past the park and back to the marble bridge to complete the loop.
POINTS OF INTEREST: The white marble St. Dominic's Church built in 1925 by parishioners; the newly refurbished marble bridge built in 1915 as a memorial to Fletcher Proctor; the Proctor Free Library built in 1913 northeast of the marble bridge and south of Southerland Falls; the blue marble Union Church built in 1890; Beaver Pond, a quiet spot with pull-offs for parking and an excellent site for a picnic; Sutherland Falls quarry, which fed the marble boom in Proctor from the 1830s until 1907; and the old Vermont Marble Company shops and the marble office building on either side of Main Street.
