Lake St. Catherine Nature Trail

OVERVIEW: A short and easy walk through the woods and fields of the state park.


TOTAL MILEAGE: 1.1 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 70 feet

TERRAIN: Woodland and meadow trail.

LOCATION: From the intersection of VT Route 30 (Beaman Street) and VT Route 140 (East Main Street) in the center of Poultney village follow Route 30 south (through some turns on village streets) for 3.5 miles to the entrance of Lake St. Catherine State Park on the right. Turn into the park. There may be an entrance fee. Park in the parking lot that is immediately beyond the entrance station. Pick up a Nature Trail interpretive brochure and map. Start your walk on the Nature Trail, which starts on the north side of the parking lot.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION: Follow the Nature Trail. At a "T" junction turn right to traverse the loop counterclockwise, then right again under the power lines. The trail climbs gently through the woods to the foundation of an old farmhouse, then along a ridge, down to a more open area near lake level, and back to the parking lot. A side trail from the foundation leads to a pretty field with a view of the Taconics.

POINTS OF INTEREST: Along the first part of the trail numbered markers call your attention to various species of trees, some of which are uncommonly large. A great place to learn your Vermont trees! While in the park you may want to take advantage of the its welldeveloped picnic and swimming areas.
