There
are good hikes all over the Rutland Region, and some are
much closer than you think! Begin with an exploration of Rutland's
Pine Hill Park, then try the Canty Trail or the Pittsford Trails,
just outside the city. Drive up to the Long Trail, which is easily
accessible from Rt. 4, Rt. 103 or Rt. 73, and try some of Vermont's
border to border Green Mountain ramble!
Hikes in the Rutland Region:
Pine
Hill Park: In Rutland City. About 500 acres of woods
on a hill crisscrossed with trails, two pretty ponds at the top.
Trails leave park onto private land accessing several thousand
acres. . Currently unmarked, but trail signage is coming soon.
First half-mile on any trail is a moderate uphill. Great mountain
biking, too!
Little
Rock Pond: A moderate
level hike to one of the beautiful and popular spots on the Long
Trail. From Trail head, follow the Long/Applachian Trail (white
blazes) north for 2.3 miles, passing Lula Tye Shelter and the
south end of the Little Rock Pond Loop Trail, and skirting the
east side of Little Rock Pond, to its outlet at the northern end.
Return by same route.
Pittsford
Trails: These trails have more hills than the Caldwell
Trail Area, and are moderate in difficulty. Trail maps are located
at trail heads.
The
Long Trail: The Long Trail
is the crown jewel of Vermont's trails system. It is a footpath
that runs the length of the state, mostly along the spine of the
Green Mountains. The hiking is generally strenuous. It is possible
to find loops, but for shorter hikes, out and back trips work
best.
