Walks and Hikes in Rutland County, Vermont, have been compiled by the Maps and Trails Committee of the Rutland Area Physical Activity
Coalition (RAPAC). We hope to provide answers to the question "Where can I go for a walk around here?" Our county is fortunate in having over 200 miles of trail that will meet the needs of pedestrians of any degree of ambition and any level of fitness. In this first edition we
have selected 20 great walks, and it is our hope to include many more walks in a future edition. We have tried to include the widest possible variety of walks in terms of their natural settings, degree of challenge, and location around the county. You'll find everything from a 50-yard stroll on a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk at West Rutland Marsh to a 7.2-mile roundtrip hike up Killington Peak, at 4,241 feet the highest point in the county. Each walk has a "heart" rating, to describe its challenge in terms of a heart-healthy outing.
EASY - One-heart walks are short, with flat or gentle terrain.
MODERATE - Two-heart walks are longer and with more elevation gain.
CHALLENGING - Three-heart walks are more in the "hiking" category, with more uphills and downhills, and varied treadways.
Each walk description also has a general overview of the walk, level of difficulty, total mileage, elevation gain, terrain, location (how to get there), a route description, and notes on points of interest. A locator map and route map goes with each walk as well. Hikes can be loops, out-and-backs, or from one point to another. Clearly, the walker can modify and adapt the routes described here, and we've described other loop options where appropriate.
